The Accidental Circuit
Roll copper into a cylinder. Suspend iron inside it without letting the metals touch. Add liquid that carries ions, then complete an external circuit. Iron gives up electrons; reduction occurs at the copper side; a small potential appears. The Khujut Rabu jar supplies the metals and spacing. Modern hands supply the liquid, contacts, and circuit. That gap is the whole mystery: the object can participate in a battery, but archaeology has not shown that its makers asked it to.
Hardware Without Software
A replica answers one question: could this arrangement make a voltage? Yes, once we add what the surviving artifact lacks. It cannot answer the historical question: did anyone use it that way? Electroplating, pain relief, and ritual practice have all been proposed. No associated wires, bank of cells, text, or securely identified plated object closes the archaeological circuit. The jar keeps its most important part outside itself — context.
Latent Potential
The jar did not hold a charge through 1,600 years of darkness. Without electrolyte and circuit, nothing was running; its iron-and-copper chemistry is not the lithium-ion chemistry inside a phone. What survived was a shape that the electrical age taught us to recognise. We look backward and see a battery waiting to be named. The jar looks back with a harder question: are we recovering an ancient intention, or completing the object with our own?
