Antikythera Mechanism
The Antikythera Mechanism is the oldest known analogue computer. Found in a Greek shipwreck, this bronze device used complex gears to predict the positions of planets and eclipses decades in advance. It is the physical embodiment of Determinism: the idea that the universe is a machine, and the future is just a calculation waiting to be run.

This is not magic; it is math. The Antikythera Mechanism was built somewhere in the Aegean — most likely Rhodes, home of the finest astronomical school of the ancient world. It proves that the ancients didn't just see the stars as gods; they saw them as clockwork. And if the heavens are clockwork, then the future is fixed.
Laplace's Demon
This artifact is the physical proof of a philosophical idea: Determinism. In 1814, Pierre-Simon Laplace proposed a hypothetical intellect he called 'Laplace's Demon' — not a supernatural being, just an imaginary, all-knowing mind — that, if it knew the position and speed of every atom in the universe, could calculate the entire future. The Antikythera Mechanism is a mini-Demon. It suggests a universe where 'what will happen' is already written in the gears of 'what is happening.'

The Antikythera Mechanism sat in a museum basement for fifty years, catalogued as a corroded rock. No one knew it was a computer. The knowledge of how to build it had been forgotten so completely that no one knew what they were looking at.
This is what the mechanism proves about Determinism: even if the future is written in the gears of the present, the gears have to be readable. The universe may be clockwork, but we are not the clockmaker. We are late arrivals, pressing our ears against the machine, trying to hear what it is calculating.
