Light

Light did not begin at recombination. Photons already filled the young universe, but free electrons scattered them so frequently that space was opaque. About 380,000 years after the Big Bang, cooling allowed electrons and nuclei to form neutral atoms; photons then travelled freely. Cosmic expansion stretched that released glow into today's Cosmic Microwave Background — the oldest light we can observe directly and a snapshot of the universe becoming transparent.

01 / Context

The Universe Becomes Transparent

Imagine a fog filling the universe. For roughly its first 380,000 years, hot plasma kept photons coupled to matter: free electrons repeatedly scattered the light. As expansion cooled the cosmos to around 3,000 Kelvin, electrons combined with nuclei to make neutral atoms and scattering fell sharply. The fog cleared. Light had existed long before this transition; recombination made the universe transparent enough for that ancient glow to travel on.

02 / Context

The Physics of Recombination

The name is historical: 'recombination' describes electrons combining with nuclei, even though this was their first durable union in cosmic history. The change was neither instantaneous nor everywhere identical. As the expanding plasma cooled, neutral hydrogen formed over a finite interval and photons decoupled from matter. That light has travelled ever since, stretched by cosmic expansion from a hot glow into microwaves while preserving a statistical imprint of the density and motion of the young universe.

03 / Context

The First Light

Every CMB photon is a messenger from the moment the universe became transparent, not from the birth of light. When this radiation last scattered there were no stars or planets, but the glow was not perfectly featureless: tiny anisotropies already traced the seeds of later structure. Billions of years later, observers found this background as persistent antenna noise — after first eliminating terrestrial causes, including contamination from pigeons.
