How We Know It Is True

Mass-energy equivalence was not an abstraction waiting for belief. In 1932, John Cockcroft and Ernest Walton split a lithium atom with accelerated protons at the Cavendish Laboratory. The fragments flew apart with more kinetic energy than the protons carried in — and the missing mass, measured precisely, matched Einstein's equation to within experimental error. The atom had converted a fraction of its mass into energy.

Three years later, the same principle explained how the Sun shines. Hans Bethe showed that hydrogen nuclei fuse into helium deep inside stars, and the slight mass difference between the inputs and the output — four hydrogen nuclei weigh more than one helium nucleus — is released as the light that warms the Earth. Every second, the Sun converts roughly 4.3 million tonnes of mass into energy. E = mc² is not a metaphor. It is the engine of stars.

The Equation That Dissolved a Border

Before 1905, matter was matter and light was light. They occupied separate categories in every physics textbook. A twenty-six-year-old patent clerk, working without a laboratory, without academic support, without anyone asking him to solve this problem, proved that the border between them does not exist. It never did.

The nonduality is literal. When a positron meets an electron, both vanish and two photons appear — pure mass becoming pure light. When a photon strikes an atom with sufficient energy, it can create a particle-antiparticle pair — pure light becoming mass. The equation does not describe a metaphor. It describes a world in which the distinction between substance and radiance was always a failure of human perception.
